Tap, Tap. Is This Mike On?

Hello -lo -lo -lo.

My name is Karen.  And I’m a blogger.  And a reforming yo-yo dieter.  And a wife and mother with a newly empty nest.  And at 48, I’m still wondering who I want to be when I grow up.  And, just for today, I get to tell it to the world.  Well, the blog world, that is.

Today is my SITS day.  If you stopped by for that very reason, then you already know what I mean.  If not, SITS is a “group of 10,000 women bloggers dedicated to supporting one another by leaving comments.”  Each day they feature a different blogger, and today, it’s me!  If you’ve never visited the SITStahood, check it out; they also have great tips on all sorts of subjects.

So, pull up a keyboard, and I’ll tell you a little something about myself and my blog.

Once upon a time:  I started blogging almost two years ago.  Blindly and naively.  I knew nothing about it, having only read a blog or two; I had no expectations.  At the time, I was embarking on what I thought would be my “last ever diet” and looking for some personal accountability and motivation.  So I wrote.  And a funny thing happened on the way to my goal weight – I discovered that I loved blogging!  So I wrote some more and then some more.  And then some more, because I’m rather long-winded in print.  So, apologies for that:)

The plot thickens:  I love words.  And semantics.  I love puns and analogies.  I love having a conversation with readers so reply to almost every comment left (although maybe that won’t be possible today).  I love when I read or write something that makes me think.  And question.  And look at something in a new way.  I love the little revelations that come with blogging and the big eye-openers.  I love when a post I’ve written resonates with readers.  But most of all, what I love about blogging is the sense of community.  And the connections and friendships I’ve made.

Happily ever after:  Mostly I ramble about my progress and struggles on what I know realize is a never-ending journey to a still undefined healthy lifestyle.  Sometimes I talk about things that are totally unrelated.  Not long ago I starting thinking about the future of my blog, as I try to define myself and my little corner of the blogosphere.  I have no idea what I’ll write about down the road, but I know I’ll still be blogging.  Rambling.  Ruminating.  Musing.  Thinking aloud.  And I hope some of you will be reading along:)

For a sampling of my posts, check out my favorites page.   Thanks for visiting:)

And if you’re a regular reader, thanks for sharing this little part of my life.  You make it all worthwhile.

  1. Happy SITS day! I loved learning just a bit more about you. As (I hope) you know, I’m a huge fan of your blog because I love not only the content, but the care you take with what you write!

PS. It’s also nice to see what you look like!
PPS. My post today was inspired by your previous one….

    Deb

  2. Happy SITS day! Because of our blogs, we are now friends in real life having met three times and that, I’ve found, is another wonderful benefit of BlogLand. Sometimes it translates into Real World Friendships! Enjoy your day in the sun (no pun intended since I know you avoid the sun at all costs)!! BTW, the picture looks just like you. Laughing and having a good time.

    • Karen

LOL – If only I’d had you to go through the many photo proofs with me:) My husband, who happened to be my patient photographer, disagree with me about which to use.

  3. Great picture! For a minute there, I thought you were holding one of those shake weight thingies. 🙂

Enjoy your SITS day! I hope it doesn’t result in the need for a sitz bath! 🙂

  4. I’m right there with you on that never-ending journey to be healthy! Have a great SITS day!

  5. Happy SITS Day! This is my first time visiting, but judging from your picture, it looks like you’ve had lifestyle-change success! I’ll be back later to poke around more. As a working, single mom, I must go feed the kids!

    • Karen

Honestly, I don’t know how I’d find the time to do the whole blogging thing if my kids were still needing me. One advantage to them growing up:)

  6. Very nice! And I do like the photo. I love the section about semantics and such — stated well. Your respect for words always comes through. 🙂

    • Karen

Probably why I told you recently about a word you used that I loved. Can’t right now remember what it was:( When I was going to write a second, anonymous blog, it had a definite word theme to it.

  7. Hi Karen! I hope *many many many* new people check your blog out because you’re funny, kind, intelligent in what your say, and supportive yourself.

I just love that idea of so many people supporting each other by comments–I do that myself–so I’ll have to check that out.

    🙂 Marion

    Happy SITS day!
I hope you enjoy all the attention today!
I’m heading out to work any second (actually, already running late) so I’ll wander some more later, but congrats on your new healthy lifestyle, and nice to meet you!
    Mel

  9. Happy SITS day!!!! Can’t wait to look around 🙂

  10. I enjoyed poking around here and am right there with you on so many things. Empty Nest? Yes. Loving words, semantics, metaphors, etc. – Yes. (my past life as a high school English teacher attests to that). Great writing. My boys played basketball too so I related to that analogy. I’m a seamstress/quilter and have always liked the saying, “By the yard – it’s hard, but inch by inch – it’s a cinch.” Right down the lines you speak of. Fun to meet you this morning, Karen, I’m putting Waisting Time in my favorites.

    • Karen

Love that saying; I’ve never heard it before. I admit that sometimes I do an internet search so that I don’t make glaring grammatical mistakes!

  11. Wandered over from SITS; it’s my first time visiting. You make me laugh. I started blogging for many of the same reasons as you. I haven’t been yo-yo dieting though, not for some years. I’m taking a break from all that. Looking forward to looking around here an getting to know you better!

  12. Happy SITS day. I think most people struggle with what they want to be when they grow up. As long as you never stop looking and learning, that’s OK. Good luck with your goal of a healthy lifestyle.

  13. I have never heard of SITS.. love it & loved the post! Like Cammy, my thoughts went to the Shake Weight thing!;-)

I best check out that site! I really do love the name of it!

  14. Haha, @Cammy – shake weight! My first assumption was that we were going to see some karaoke video. Maybe in a future post?

You’re a great blogger. I was so impressed with your post about your blogging process. I’m a one-draft wonder kind of blogger, banging it out when the inspiration hits. Sometimes I plan, but it is more riffing than careful composition.

  15. Hey, Karen! So nice to see you on your SITS day! I am wholeheartedly supportive of your travels down the path to never ending healthy living!! And, I enjoy our comment-trade every now and then. We could brainstorm sometime….

  16. What a wonderful greeting and introduction. So nice to meet you through SITS. Love your post and your talent with words. Hope you don’t mind but I’m following your blog. Have a titillating SITS day.

  17. Happy, happy SITS day, I look forward to reading more. 🙂

  18. Karen congratulations on your SITS day…again. =) It is pretty exciting to meet people that you can identify with. I’m going to go check out your favorites page!! =)

    • I can’t comment on your previous posts but I wanted you to know that the “cankles” entry title made me snort and laugh out loud before I even read a single word! Love your stuff Karen! Keep it up! =)

      • Karen

LOl – thank you. And sorry for that. I turned off comments on posts after a certain time-frame goes by to minimize spam. Got that advice online somewhere and it really has helped a lot. Cankles. Ugh.

  19. Happy SITS day!

I’ve had a read through a couple of your recent posts. I like your style of writing.

You blog in the same way I do by the sounds of it. Rambling. Ruminating. Musing. Thinking aloud. haha!

I hope someone is reading mine too!

    I’ll stop by again soon,

  21. Happy SITS day! You have a very fun and creative blog! Hope you have a day filled with much comment love!

  22. Whoo hooo! Happy happy SITS day! So glad it is finally your turn. I need to change that! I’m already a bonafide follower (brag, brag) but lately I’ve been stalking you (i.e., reading but not commenting) – I’ll do better, promise! You inspire me to keep on my weight loss journey so don’t quit chatting about that along with the changes you plan to make!

  23. Pam

Happy SITS day! Always glad to meet a fellow empty nester…and fellow seeker of that elusive healthy lifestyle! LOL

  24. Congrats on your SITS day! How exciting for you! On a personal note, I yo yo’d for years and it was always a struggle. It’s so nice to read others perspective and have a place to come to and relate.

I’ve finally found my ‘happy’ place with my weight and acceptance of all things food.

    Keep up the great post!

    Happy Blogging,

    Amanda

  25. We’re a few short years from empty nest and I’m already wondering who I’ll be then. Maybe you have some tips?

Congratulations on your SITS day. I hope it’s a great day for you.

  26. Congratulations on your SITS day! Enjoy the spotlight and all the bloggy love coming your way!

  27. Pam

How fun is this, and I love your header. I am obsessed with headers although mine is kind of plane Jane.

Happy Sits Day! And I think you take a dashing photo.

    Pam

  28. Congratulations!! 🙂 Great picture of you!

  29. Happy SITS Day, Karen! I love your blog!

  30. I tend to think that blogging saves us from ourselves, because we feel the pressure to keep on track since we’re talking to the world about it. You’ve set a great example of that! Congratulations on your SITS day!

  31. Congrats on your SITS day! I too am a cereal killer but I am now on weight watchers and watching portion sizes. I was not able to leave a comment on your other posts so I am leaving one here. Take care!

  32. Congrats on being F/B today! Enjoy your days as Queen!

  33. Happy SITS Day!

Enjoy it, and I’ll enjoy your blog 🙂

  34. Happy SITS Day!

For a second there I thought you were holding the Shake Weight, haha (such a useless gadget!).

I think it’s a continual struggle to try and define yourself here in the blogosphere, esp since there’s so many sprouting everyday!

  35. I found your blog from SITS, which I am new to, so I guess this is where I say “Happy SITS day!” I find your blog interesting and I enjoyed reading your past post. I also love your writing style. I look forward to reading future post, as I am a new follower 🙂

  36. Good to know that I’ll always be trying to figure out what to do with my life 🙂 It’s nice to have company on that road. Stopping by from SITS!

  50. Man, I haven’t been to visit your beautiful corner of the blogosphere in way too long but I’m so grateful that a SITS day allows me to see what you’ve been up to! You look beautiful in this picture and I love that you are still figuring out what to do with your life. Aren’t we all, and does that ever stop?

Anyway, much, much love on your SITS day and enjoy this time in the spotlight!

  51. Jan

  55. Glad you took the plunge to blog. Glad to see you so playful in that mic picture. I am guessing you are actually playful. Love your rambling and ruminating about lots of things including the love you have for your family. Yep, this is a never ending pursuit, good health. Never ending. But I am okay with that.

Thanks for the info, too, about Sits. I was not aware of that community.

  57. hope you are soaking it all up today!

  58. Glad I found you on your SIT’s day. I am about to begin my own weight loss journey. I’ll be digging around a bit for tips. I hope you don’t mind 😉

  60. Happy SITS day Karen! I hope you are having a great day. I recently had my SITS day and it was a blast! Enjoy!

  61. Happy SITS day!!! Love the look of the blog – don’t mind me if I browse around for a bit of healthy inspiration 🙂

  62. Just look at how adorable you look 🙂
…and to think I’ve never even heard of SITS. Going to have to check that out!

  63. Fun! I was startled by the number of comments at first. Before I started reading, I thought, “I have to ask her waht the heck she’s doing!”
You always get lots of comments, of course….
Blogging really is it’s own art form, isn’t it? And you do have a gift for it. I always enjoy your writing. Every time.
I like the microphone picture too!

  64. Love your blog! Thanks for sharing!

  65. Congrats on your SITS days!

I’m brutally honest on my blog as well. Sometimes I upset people..or rock the boat…but hey, the truth is always more interesting than fiction. 🙂

  66. Congratulations on being a SITS featured blogger! You always write the most thought-provoking, witty, and heartfelt blogs.. I truly enjoy reading them!

  67. Happy SITS day Karen. As I read about your quest to define and redefine yourself I can relate to that. I feel the same as a blogger and as a human being. I love that you write because you love it, as do I, but, like you I find the sense of community so amazing. I also read your post about your memory loss, and it’s so interesting as we all try to cram more and more into our minds, it can’t be possible that remember everything, can it? I like your doctor’s clarification about the keys. For now, I juggle like a madwoman and remember most things, but to do it all, is nearly impossible so giving ourselves a break is also important. I hope today was very special for you and I really am enjoying your blog, I will be back!

    • Karen

Thanks for taking the time to check things out and comment, Shannon. Yes, we do need to give ourselves a break now and then, I agree. But, boy, that memory thing drives me crazy!

  68. happy SITSday SITStah! 🙂

  69. Love the photo 🙂 Happy SITS day! Following you now on GFC, have a great day!

  70. Glad you found blogging and were able to have success with your weight loss.

  71. Carla

    Hi Karen!
You know I am still reading every one of your posts even though I am taking an extended blogging break!
I’ve always felt that you were one of the best bloggers out there so I can’t say that I’m surprised to see you as the SITS featured blogger! 🙂

  72. Hey, I just stopped by from SITS. Congrats again on your day . Yes, the mike was on 😉

  73. Happy SITS day! I’m relatively new to this blogging thing and I’m glad to find inspirational blogs such as yours. Keep up the good work!

  74. Hi Karen! I found you through a posting on another website. I’m just starting my blogging and haven’t even posted yet as I wade through all the technical stuff on WordPress. I may be one of the “older” bloggers having started my weight loss journey probably 40 years ago (and learned a few things along the way). I want to share my experience as a “loser” and Weight Watcher leader for 20 years in the hopes I can shorten someone’s learning curve. Glad I found your blog and will be following in the future in the hopes we can get to know each other better!

    • Karen

Another Karen:) I did WW about a decade ago. Made the mistake of stopping the plan and meetings after I met my goal weight:( I’m sure you’ll find lots who would appreciate your wisdom and experience.

  75. You are such a captivating writer!

  76. Congratulations on the recognition. Definitely so well deserved 🙂
